COPE Statement on Authorship and AI Tools

COPE Statement on Authorship and AI Tools

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT or LLM (Large Language Models) in scientific publications is growing rapidly. The Committee on Publication Ethics, the organization that provides guidelines and recommendations for the ethical publication of research results, defines:

  • Authorship: as a substantial contribution to the conception, design, execution or analysis of the research, as well as critical review and final approval of the version of the paper for publication. Any author of a scientific document must have made a substantial and verifiable contribution.
It also indicates that an AI tool cannot be considered as the author of a scientific paper because it does not have the ability to conceive, design, execute or analyze a research. AI tools can be useful for data collection, statistical analysis, graph generation or text writing, but should always be used under the supervision and responsibility of a human researcher. It adds that these tools cannot assert the presence or absence of conflicts of interest or manage licensing and copyright agreements.

In terms of responsibility, it indicates that:
  • Authors using AI tools should be transparent in reporting in the Methodology (or similar) section of the paper how and which AI tool was used. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript, including parts produced by an AI tool, and must therefore avoid any breach of publication ethics.
